BMW PGA Championship betting

May 22, 2014

One of the biggest events on the European Tour, the BMW PGA Championship, takes place this week at Wentworth and Paddy Power have Justin Rose and Lee Westwood at joint front-runners all at 12/1. McIlroy was pushed out this morning from 12/1 from 14/1 following the news today that he has called off his wedding to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

Outright betting

The key attribute for the West Course in Surrey is accuracy and Francesco Molinari's precise hitting makes the Italian a good option at 25/1 for an outright bet. Although he was quiet in Spain last week, Molinari has finished 7 th and 9 th in the last two years here and should not be overlooked.

Having won the Players Championship two weeks ago, Martin Kaymer has shown he is back on form and is another good option for an outright bet at 22/1.

Place Only - 5 places

Defending champion Matteo Manassero is a long 50/1 to repeat last year's victory but should not be completely ignored as Wentworth has proved excellent terrain for the Italian golfer. Having grown up playing on similar courses, Manassero is 10/1 to finish in the top five.

Alejandro Canizares is 12/1 to place in the top five. He finished fourth here last year despite still recovering from an illness and this year arrives fully fit having finished seventh in the Spanish Open last Sunday.

Leader After Round 1

The weather forecast says showers are set to take place during the tournament, something that would help rather than hinder McIlroy who is the 18/1 favourite to be leading the way after the first round.

Luke Donald, a 14/1 shot for a tournament win, has had an incredible run at Wentworth having won in 2011 and 2012 and finished T-2 in 2010. At 20/1 to be leading after round 1 all eyes will be on the Englishman.

A Paddy Power spokesperson said: "We've been forced to lengthen the odds of a McIlroy victory as he seems to struggle on the golf course when he's having problems off the course, and we've also shortened the odds on him missing the cut from 7/2 to 11/4. Being in the UK with all that is going on won't be great for McIlroy and it would be no great shock to see him miss the cut on Friday."

Six place special - Paddy Power will be paying out on six places on all outright bets placed before the start of this week's BMW PGA Championship.
