Everton players enjoy a close encounter with The Open Championship trophy

May 13, 2014

The appearance of one of the most iconic sporting trophies in the world at Everton's Finch Farm training complex left even the club's top Premier League stars in awe.

With The Open Championship being held at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake from July 13-20, some of Everton's golf-mad players and staff were given the opportunity to see the Claret Jug, the famous trophy each Open winner receives, up close.

First-team stars - including Toffees skipper Phil Jagielka - were lining up to see the trophy for themselves and spot the name of their favourite Open Champion.

Fellow golf fans Steven Naismith, Aiden McGeady and Leon Osman - just back from his testimonial golf match in aid of Claire House Children's Hospice and the Make A Wish Foundation - relished the opportunity to see the Claret Jug for themselves.

"We're all really looking forward to The Open coming to Royal Liverpool," said Jagielka. "Quite a few of us play a bit of golf and as professional sportsmen we respect the work and commitment that those who compete for this amazing trophy dedicate to their craft.

"To get the opportunity to see it first-hand and read some of the famous names etched on it, from Henry Cotton to Tiger Woods and last year's winner Phil Mickelson, was great."

The Open Championship will be held at Royal Liverpool from 13 - 20 July.

Purchase your tickets by 31 May for early season prices. Book now on 01334 460010 or visit TheOpen.com/DaysOut.

Under 16s can see The Open Championship for free when accompanied by a paying adult.
