Dustin Johnson reported to have failed drugs tests

August 1, 2014

It's been a whirlwind 48 hours for golfer Dustin Johnson.

On Thursday, he announced he was taking a leave of absence from golf. Just a day later, a report revealed why: The PGA Tour suspended him for six months after testing positive for cocaine.

A source also told Golf.com's Michael Bamberger and Michael Walker that he's failed two other drug tests in the past: One for marijuana in 2009 and another for cocaine in 2012.

In 2012, Johnson missed the Masters and was out for nearly three months. At the time, it was announced that he injured his back while lifting a jet ski, but Golf.com cited a source in its report as saying Johnson was serving a suspension for a failed drug test.

"Under the PGA Tour’s drug-testing policies," they wrote, "the Tour is not required to announce any disciplinary actions against players who test positive for recreational drugs." They also added "Johnson’s conduct has long been a topic of conversation among close observers of the Tour. He is often seen in bars near his home in Jupiter, Fla., and is also known to have had a sexual indiscretion with at least one wife of a PGA Tour player."

Here's Johnson's statement on Thursday

"I am taking a leave of absence from professional golf, effective immediately. I will use this time to seek professional help for personal challenges I have faced. By committing the time and resources necessary to improve my mental health, physical well-being and emotional foundation, I am confident that I will be better equipped to fulfill my potential and become a consistent champion. I respectfully ask my fans, well-wishers and the media for privacy as I embark upon this mission of self-improvement."

Johnson is fifth on the United States Ryder Cup points list. With him not playing the event, that means whoever is ranked 10th on the points list as of Monday, Aug. 11, will make the team automatically.
