Grand Del Mar's Shawn Cox Named 2013 Golf Professional of the Year

February 14, 2014

Shawn Cox, director of golf at The Grand Del Mar - the Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond resort known for its 380-acre, private championship-caliber golf course - has been named the recipient of the 2013 Golf Professional of the Year by the San Diego Chapter of the PGA of Southern California.

The award - presented last week at the group's annual meeting at the San Diego Country Club - was voted by fellow golf professionals and recognizes Cox's significant contributions to community outreach, promoting the game of golf, continuing education and involvement within the PGA.

Cox, who is past president of the San Diego PGA and has served on its board for seven years, said he was honored and surprised to be lauded by his peers. "This is quite an honor for me, and I am proud to be recognized for my involvement with this outstanding organization," he said.

As director of golf for The Grand Del Mar, Cox oversees all golf operations, including tournament programs, budgeting and staff supervision for The Grand Golf Club, which in addition to the Tom Fazio-designed 7,160-yard, par-72 course, features a 50,000-square-foot clubhouse. Since joining The Grand Golf Club in 2006, he has been instrumental in launching and designing a variety of programs, including The Grand Golf Performance Academy, which encompasses seven acres of practice area and cutting-edge techniques such as SAM PuttLab, K-Vest 3-D technology and online digital video analysis. He has also helped develop a junior golf program at the resort; as well as initiate and design The Grand Junior Golf Academy. He has received numerous accolades over the years and was honored with the 2010 San Diego PGA Junior Golf Leader of the Year; San Diego PGA Retailer of the Year awards in 2010 and 2011; and the 2011 San Diego Chapter Horton Smith Award for continued education programs.

A member of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of America, Cox completed the PGA's specialty certification in instruction in 2005, and was the first person in Southern California to be certified through this program. In addition, he is a Titleist Performance Institute Level 3 Certified Fitness, Biomechanics and Junior Instructor.

A native of Seattle, he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington, where he was on the National and Rose Bowl Championship Football Team and inducted into the "Husky" Hall of Fame.
