Ian Poulter needs to improve form

May 21, 2014

Paul McGinley has warned Ian Poulter to raise his game and admits he is concerned about the Ryder Cup legend’s form after he dropped out of the qualifying places.

The Florida-based English star enjoyed a strong end to last year and seemed set to cement his place for Gleneagles.

But the team’s talisman at Medinah has only one top-10 finish in 10 starts this year before teeing up at this week’s BMW PGA.

Poulter, who needed a wild card in 2012, is now outside the nine automatic spots.

European skipper McGinley said: “I spoke to him for 45 minutes on the phone last week and we had a really good chat.

“He’s determined to be there but I’ve said it before and I told him last week – he has to earn his place.

“He knows he needs to step on the gas over the summer. He needs to improve.

“He is bullish but for someone looking in concerned is the word. Anybody who was in the team and then goes off you have to be concerned about.

“But I wouldn’t say I’m worried about it, far from it. He will do what he needs to do and I will be watching him closely over the summer.”

Poulter, who has missed the cut at Wentworth eight times in 12 appearances, said: “I didn’t have the best of starts but my form is good. I am very happy.

“There are a lot of great tournaments to play over the next four months leading up to the Ryder Cup. There is a lot of good golf yet to come.”

McGinley added he will not offer technical help to his players, such as advising Lee Westwood on his short game.

The Dubliner said: “That’s none of my business. I’m not God, I’m just a Ryder Cup captain. I don’t tell somebody how they should chip, how they should putt, how they should improve their long game, what clubs they should use. I don’t get involved in that.”

Victor Dubuisson, who tops the Ryder Cup rankings, has pulled out of the BMW PGA with a shoulder injury.

The Frenchman said: “To play Wentworth I would have needed an injection but I prefer not to do that so I don’t risk the rest of the season.”
