Famed Abu Dhabi calligrapher puts Luke Donald in the frame

January 28, 2014

The UAE's most celebrated calligrapher, Mohammed Al Mandi, unexpectedly produced a work of art for golfer - art collector Luke Donald at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. Al Mandi delivered a 'signature' work of art to the popular, big name English golfer following his autograph signing session, turning the tables on the superstar with his own name in Arabic calligraphy.

"It's a work of art and one of a kind - wow! I didn't expect this," said Donald, a collector of contemporary art.

Championship organisers Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) invited master calligrapher Mandi to create the valuable keepsake for Luke in a nod to the former world number one's own passion for painting and artistic flair. Praised the world-over for his distinctive style, which often features overlapping Arabic lettering, Mandi earned international acclaim most famously for his designs featured in the interior of Abu Dhabi's iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque - listed by TripAdvisor as one of the world's top landmark attractions.

Mandi presented the gift following Donald's busy autograph signing session for hundreds of golf fans in the heart of Abu Dhabi Golf Club's buzzing Championship Village.

"From one artist to another, it's an honour to be able to present Luke with a memento of his time in Abu Dhabi - outside of the realm of golf," Mandi comments.  "He was highly complimentary about my work, and clearly has an aesthetic eye."

Mandi's artwork has appeared at exhibitions throughout the Middle East and in Europe, and is highly collectible, treasured by avid collectors of Middle Eastern art throughout the world.  Residents of the United Arab Emirates will be familiar with Mandi's work, which is featured on every banknote as well as those in Bahrain.

"The artwork is a special piece, reflective of Luke's persona on the course. I wanted to capture the fluid motion of Luke's swing in my brushstrokes, and the precision of his putts in the angles,"   said Mohammed.

Donald, who graduated in Art Theory and Practice in 2001 from the USA's Northwestern University, is a keen painter himself. He famously auctioned off an original painting in 2002 through the PGA Tour in aid of charity.
