25 years of the MercedesTrophy

September 30, 2014

In 1989 when the first MercedesTrophy was held, six European countries took part. Some 25 years later, the MercedesTrophy is a global invitation-only tournament series for amateurs, and is staged in over 60 countries. There are now over 60,000 participants every year - and over the years nearly a million customers and fans of the brand have teed off at the MercedesTrophy.  For the anniversary event Mercedes-Benz has invited 33 teams from all over the world to Stuttgart from 25 - 30 September to choose the best national team for the Nations Cup and the best individual player in the 2014 MercedesTrophy.

"25 years of the MercedesTrophy is a milestone in our commitment to golf. We are very pleased to celebrate this special anniversary at the MercedesTrophy World Final in Stuttgart with the people the series was specially created for in 1989: our customers and enthusiastic golfers. Barely any other form of sport is as exciting and as multi-faceted as golf. The qualities that are embodied in the sport of golf are reflected in our products", says Dr Jens Thiemer, Vice President Marketing Communications Mercedes-Benz Cars.

In addition to taking part in the golf-related programme, the participants can experience the brand and its products at close hand with guided tours of the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the Sindelfingen plant and Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach, as well as test drives in the latest AMG models. The highlight car of this year's MercedesTrophy World Final is the new S-Class S 63 AMG Coupé, which is being presented on the last evening by Ola Källenius, member of the Divisional Board Mercedes-Benz Cars, Marketing & Sales.

In parallel with the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, at which our brand ambassadors Martin Kaymer and Rickie Fowler will be playing for Team Europe and Team USA, the MercedesTrophy World Final participants will also be playing in national teams for victory in the Nations Cup. Three rounds of golf are played at the Schloss Nippenburg golf course designed by brand ambassador Bernhard Langer and Stuttgart's Solitude golf club, which has hosted the Mercedes German Masters on several occasions.

Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador Martin Kaymer is the face of the MercedesTrophy in this anniversary year. He will come to Stuttgart on Monday straight from the Ryder Cup, and present the trophies at the award ceremony. What's more, the participants can play against him in a "Beat the Pro" competition. Martin Kaymer: "I am proud to be actively involved in this year's MercedesTrophy, especially in its special 25th anniversary year. To support golf worldwide and make this sport even more popular is something which is very close to my heart. I am looking forward to be at the MercedesTrophy World Final for the first time."

Brand ambassador Bernhard Langer, who this season won two Major tournaments on the Senior Tour, will attend the Welcome Evening, when the participants traditionally introduce themselves and their nations in the respective national costumes. On Sunday evening brand ambassador Louis Oosthuizen will host the Wine & Dine Event, at which wines including his own label, Louis57, will be served. The participants can test their skills against both golf pros in a special "Beat the Pro" contest.

Those participating in the MercedesTrophy World Final are also battling for the final place in this year's special competition "Drive to the Major". Everyone taking part in the MercedesTrophy worldwide has the chance of participating in another unique golfing event. Contestants can win a place in the qualification tournament for the "Monday After Event" in the "Straightest Drive" competition. As official patron of the world's oldest golf tournament, Mercedes-Benz gives players the chance to tee off on the same course on which the professional golfers were battling for victory on the previous day. Furthermore, the winners get to experience The Open Championship as Mercedes-Benz VIP guests. "The MercedesTrophy is an important tool which supports golf globally which I am happy and proud to be a part of. The connection between the MercedesTrophy and The Open Championship through the Drive to the Major competition is a unique highlight for every golf fan and for the winners a golfer's dream", says Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador Adam Scott, the face of the "Drive to the Major" competition in the MercedesTrophy.

This year too, donations have been collected at all MercedesTrophy tournaments held so far for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. In the World Final there is also the special ranking for the "Laureus Longest Drive". Mercedes-Benz is a founder member of the foundation, which tackles social challenges worldwide using funds raised through sport. It currently sponsors over 150 social projects worldwide, primarily aimed at helping children and young people affected by poverty, homelessness, war, violence, drug misuse, discrimination and AIDS.

Once again there is a Hole in One prize, which can be competed for on Saturday at the Schloss Nippenburg golf course. The lucky winner who manages a hole-in-one at the 8th hole will receive a new Mercedes-Benz CLA 250.

Prizes are awarded in the celebratory atmosphere of an exclusive dinner at the Mercedes-Benz dealership in Stuttgart. Alongside the Nations Cup, prizes are also awarded to the best individual players, and there is a Team Spirit Award which was presented to the team from Australia last year. The defending champion is the team from South African, which won the Nations Cup in 2013 with 189 points in total. Second place was achieved by the team from Great Britain, which also scored 189 points but was defeated by South Africa in a sudden-death playoff, followed by the team from Mexico with 188 points.
