18 holes with just one club - new golf tournament puts the fun into fundraising

January 28, 2014

A new competition will give golfers the chance to play the game in a way they've never played it before; 18 holes, but with just one club.

The competition, called One Club Golf UK, will see club golfers, juniors, ladies and pros compete in a fun and innovative challenge, while raising money for good causes.

With just one club in the bag, the focus will be on creativity and imagination - encouraging golfers to try out new shots and practice different techniques.

Every golf club in the UK is invited to take part, with the best scores going through to a national final, planned to be held at The Belfry in the autumn.

One Club Golf UK director Bill Loryman said: "The tournament is something different, it's never been done before in the UK and we think it will be a great way of getting people to do something new and have some fun on the golf course."

US star Bubba Watson recently shot an 81 at Pine Hill GC using just his 20° Ping hybrid while the Guinness World 'One Club' record is a staggering two-under-par 70, recorded by American Thad Daber, armed with his trusty six iron back in 1987.

The tournament is likely to prompt discussions in clubhouses across the country, with members debating the merits of using a four iron to gain added length off the tee or going for the extra control of a seven iron. What club will give you the best chance of sinking those nervy three-footers when it matters the most?

PGA professionals will compete for a £10,000 jackpot, with a number of pros already signing up to take part.

Mr Loryman added: "The competition will help to raise vital funds to provide equipment for the treatment of skin cancer in hospitals and clinics here in the UK. We believe it will capture the imagination of the golfing public."
