Rory McIlroy breaks off Caroline Wozniacki engagement

May 21, 2014

Rory McIlroy has broken off his engagement to tennis player Caroline Wozniacki only days after sending out wedding invitations.

The two-time major champion says ''the problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.''

The 25-year-old McIlroy is a former top-ranked golfer who won the U.S. Open in 2011 and the U.S. PGA Championship in 2012. Wozniacki, 23, has also been ranked No. 1 in her sport but never won a Grand Slam title.

They have been dating since 2011, and got engaged a few months ago on New Year's Eve.

McIlroy says, ''I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had.''

"I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting."

When McIlroy announced their engagement, he tweeted: "I have a feeling it is going to be a great year."

McIlroy, looking clearly distraught, told a news conference later in the day that he never had any thoughts of withdrawing from the European Tour's flagship event.

"I'm not going to lie," said the 25-year-old. "It's going to be really difficult but when I get inside the ropes I'm going to have to try and concentrate on the matter in hand.

"There is never a good time to end a relationship, I guess. I made a commitment to be here and I thought my duty was to play in this event."
