Ryder Cup betting preview

September 26, 2014

The noise is coming to the hills of Gleneagles, as the Ryder Cup edges closer.  The low handicappers at Paddy Power have priced up all the big markets ahead of the first tee shot on Friday morning.

Europe with home advantage, 4 of the world's top 6 golfers and facing a Tiger-less USA team will head into the event as firm 4/6 favourites. While the Americans are the outsiders to claim victory at 13/8.

The last 2 Ryder Cups have been won by a single point and it is 9/1 for this score line to be repeated once more and Europe to come out on top on 14.5 to 13.5 , while it's 10/1 for the USA to win by the slightest of margins. For those thinking that this might be a steamrolling by the Europeans they are 18/1 to down the yanks by 17.5 points to 10.5.

Looking at the top point scorer market, Rory McIlroy is 7/1 and has to be considered given his spectacular summer.  Elsewhere, Sergio Garcia is 10/ 1 with a combination of experience and form, and Ian Poulter 'Mr. Ryder Cup' himself is 12/1 as he has had a challenging year on the tour.

With Rickie Fowler looks to be the marquee player for them in the absence of Tiger, he's 12/1 to record the most points.  Big lefty Phil Mickelson who is another suffering from an out of sorts season but has the experience is also 12/1.

The Captain's picks this year have largely included experienced heads, with Stephen Gallacher the only rookie in the group of 6.  Poulter looks destined to play at least 4 matches and given his love of match play and the Ryder Cup is why he is the 2/1 favourite to be top wildcard.  Keegan Bradley at 3/1 and Lee Westwood at 4/1 look to be the other contenders , with local lad Gallacher the outsider at 9/1 .

Punters can also make an effort to predict who will be the one to really prove they have a pair and sink the putt that clinches victory over their rivals.  McIlroy and those who have done it before in McDowell and Kaymer lead the betting at 12/1.  The hero on the American side looks to be down to Fowler, Mickelson and Furyk in the betting who are all 18/1 to hole the winning putt .

A Paddy Power spokesman said, "After 2 years of waiting it's finally here, we are as excited as a kid at Christmas or Tiger in Amsterdam."
