Rory McIlroy leads US Open betting

April 16, 2014

After his best ever finish at the Masters Rory McIlroy is the early favourite to repeat his 2011 success and take the US Open title in June. McIlroy is 10/1 to win the next major after Bubba Watson sealed the first of the year at Augusta.

After a torrid second round in Georgia McIlroy upped his game and despite struggling on the par 5s the Northern Irishman finished the tournament at even par. The 2014 US Open will be played in North Carolina and McIlroy shares the favourite spot with Tiger Woods who missed his first Masters in 20 years through injury.

Woods will be bidding to win his fourth US Open title, the last major he won, in June but is chased in the early betting by Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson who are both at odds of 16/1 to add to their trophy cabinets. Jason Day is next at 20/1 followed by Justin Rose at 22/1 and Henrik Stenson at the same odds.

Runner up at Augusta this year was breakthrough talent Jordan Spieth who, along with winner Bubba Watson, are 28/1 shots to win the US Open this year. Lee Westwood, the highest placed British player from this weekend, is at odds of 33/1 to break his major hoodoo in June.

US Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson would have been delighted to see Watson, Spieth, Fowler, Kuchar, Walker and Stadler all finish tied 8 th or above in the contest. However, with Jonas Blixt sneaking joint second spot and promising form from Westwood and McIlroy Paddy Power still have Team Europe as slight favourites for the 40th Ryder Cup. Paul McGinley's side are 10/11 to win the contest in September with the US at 11/10 and a tie at 10/1.

A Paddy Power spokesman said; "Rory looked set to be on course for another Masters meltdown on day two but recovered to finish strongly meaning a third major title in four years looks very possible for McIlroy."
