Final two weeks for US Ryder Cup qualification

July 29, 2014

Seven players have separated themselves from the pack and appear to have locked up spots on the U.S. Ryder Cup team with two tournaments remaining. That leaves a group of nine golfers, who are all within 500 points of each other, likely battling for the final two automatic berths on Captain Tom Watson's squad.

Phil Mickelson is among the group on the outside looking in heading into this week's WBC-Bridgestone Invitational. Mickelson sits in 11th with 3,252.838 points in the official updated Ryder Cup standings posted Monday. He did not play last week at the RGC Canadian Open, but is in the field this week at Firestone Country Club.

PGA President Ted Bishop has done the calcualtions and from the beginning has said 4,637 Ryder Cup points should lock up one of nine automatic selections. Points leader Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Jimmy Walker, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar and Jordan Spieth have eclipsed Bishop's "magic number." Watson has mathematically clinched a spot. Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson currently own the eighth and ninth spots, but plenty could change over the next two weeks. Johnson leads No. 10 Patrick Reed by less than 50 points and Mickelson by 200.

The U.S. Ryder Cup team, including three Captain's Picks, will be finalized after next week's PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. The Ryder Cup will take place Sept. 23-28, at Gleneagles Resort in Perthsire Scotland.

Furyk made the biggest move this week with his second-place finish at the Canadian Open. He jumped from fourth to second in the standings. Here's a look at the current top 12, with the top nine in the standings after the PGA Championship earning an automatic spot:
