Video reveals the secrets of top golfers’ laser eye surgery

February 5, 2016

Rory McIlroy is the latest in a long list of top golfers to have had laser eye surgery, and Optical Express' top surgeons have revealed what he would have experienced.

Setting his sights on more major wins this year, the Northern Irishman underwent laser eye surgery towards the end of 2015.

Other professionals including Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington and Reteif Goosen have all improved their game by having laser eye surgery.

Although it is the most common elective surgical procedure in the world, few, apart from those who have experienced it know what is actually involved.

Debunking myths about the operation that Rory, Tiger and millions of others around the world have undergone, Optical Express has released a video of a live laser surgery.

Dr. Steve Schallhorn, the leading eye care provider's Chief Medical Director commentates on the journey of the patient, Kevin, while Senior Optometrist David Teenan performs the operation.

The whole process is complete in less than seven minutes and the results are instant. The patient is required to take antiseptic eye drops for a couple of days afterward, but vision should settle to 20/20 shortly after.

“Good eye skills are crucial to being a good golfer,” Dr. Schallhorn said. “Hand-eye coordination, peripheral awareness and depth perception are all dependent on good eye-sight and essential for improving your game.

“From tee to green golfers use their full range of vision, so being short or long-sighted can dramatically hinder a players' game. Most golfers that have surgery see the dramatic improvement in their short game and ability to read greens.

“Golfers of all levels, whether they are candidates for laser eye surgery or not, can improve their game by having regular eye tests and ensuring their eyes are in good condition.”
