Mickelson & Love join Valderrama no-shows

Atlanta winner Phil Mickelson and Davis Love III have joined the long list of US Tour players to decide against competing in this week's American Express World Championship in Spain.

A million-dollar first prize has not been enough to attract a dozen of the game's stars to Valderrama.

Mickelson scratched, as he said he would, after beating Tiger Woods by two shots in the Tour Championship in Atlanta on Sunday night.

The $900,000 prize makes the left-hander safe in second place on the American money list.

And because he has no chance of catching Woods, Mickelson sees no real reason to fly across the Atlantic for one week.

He joins world number three David Duval and Major winners Hal Sutton, Tom Lehman, Paul Azinger, Fred Couples and Greg Norman, while Jim Furyk is not making the trip either because of injury.

Davis Love III joins the dozen Americans skipping the American Express World Championship. Allsport.

Now Love is also skipping a return to the course where as USPGA champion he lost all his four games in the 1997 Ryder Cup and was only 16th last year.

"It just shows the strength of their Tour," said Scotland's Colin Montgomerie.

"It seems to be just another Tour event for them and they are having to travel an awful long way for it.
