Smith leads after first
round 66
Wayne Smith collected six
birdies in a flawless 66 to lead the opening round of the Australasian Tour championship
on Thursday.
Chasing his first tournament
win in seven years, the 39-year-old West Australian calmly putted his way to
a one-stroke lead over Neil Kerry.
Kerry, a 107kg (nearly
17 stone) golfer, attributed his best round of the season to watching 18 stone-plus
Darren Clarke win the big matchplay final with Tiger Woods on Sunday.
"I've always been a late
blossomer in this game," Kerry said. Sure I'd like to be a little bit fitter,
but at the moment I don't think it's really hurting my golf.
"Have a look at who won
last week, who beat Tiger? Darren Clarke," Kerry said. "He was puffing on cigars
going down the fairways there."
New Zealander Michael Campbell
needs to win the season-ending event to add to his four previous titles and become
the first player to win more than A$1 million (US$600,000) on the Australasian
Tour.
He kept himself in the
picture with a solid round of 70.
