Last day rally too late for GB & I

The United States retained the Curtis Cup today, withstanding a rally by theGreat Britain & Ireland team on the second and final day of the competition.

The American women won 10-8 after entering the second day of play ahead 7-2.

But GB&I made a match of it today, winning two of the three foursomes matches and four of the six singles matches.

The Americans lead the biennial competition, which dates from 1932, 22-6 with three ties.

Hilary Homeyer, of Edina, Minn., led the Americans with 3 1/2 points and Beth Bauer, of Cramerton, N.C., had three points.

As defending champion, the United States needed to win only 9 of the 18 points to retain the cup. GB&I would have needed 9 1/2.
