Leonard & Love lead CVS Charity Classic

The team of Justin Leonard and Davis Love III took the lead after the first round of the CVS Charity Classic at Rhode Island Country Club today.

Under the two-man, stroke play best-ball format, Leonard and Love combined for an 11-under-par 60. The team of Craig Stadler and Steve Elkington was second, three strokes behind.

Leonard and Love birdied the first two holes, and never let up. They birdied five holes on the front nine of the 6,688-yard course and six on the back nine.

"We play very similar,'' said Love, who has 13 PGA Tour victories, including the 1997 PGA Championship. ''Both of us made some nice, long putts today.''

The Leonard-Love team made the turn at 5-under, then shot a 6-under 29. Included in their back nine run was a birdie on the course's longest hole, the par-5, 538-yard 11th.

''Justin had some makable birdie putts that he didn't get to take because I was ahead of him,'' Love said. ''I hope I'm inside him tomorrow and he makes all the putts.''

Stadler and Elkington bogeyed the third and 10th holes, but also ombined for the round's only eagle - on the par-4, 350-yard 12th hole.

Billy Andrade and Brad Faxon, both from Rhode Island and the tournament organizers were in third with a seven-under 64.

The tournament, which carries a total purse of $1 million, concludes Tuesday.
