Laura Davies Invitational is cancelled for 2000

Laura Davies has won twice on the US Tour this year, but her bid to help the Ladies’ European Tour suffered a blow yesterday when her own event, the Laura Davies Invitational, was struck off this season’s schedule.
It has been replaced by a tournament at Chart Hills in Kent on the same 31 August-3 September dates – but the prize fund drops to £100,000 from the £300,000 of the inaugural Laura Davies Invitational at Brocket Hall last year.

A change in management at Brocket Hall plus the loss of sponsors Cantor Fitzgerald contributed to the decision to cancel, but Davies said: "I’m disappointed and feel very let down.

"I find it incredible that we can’t get a sponsor. Britain is always crying out for top sports people, but when they get one, the big British companies don’t lend the support."

Davies was also upset last year that many of the big names – including Swedes Annika Sorenstam, Liselotte Neumann and Helen Alfredsson – failed to turn up. "That didn’t help and now we’re paying the penalty," she said. "But the aim is to get the event back next year."

The LET Chart Hills Classic, the final event counting forthis year’s European Solheim Cup team, will be the second women’s European event tobe held at the course, whichwas designed by Nick Faldo. England’s Lora Fairclough won the Ford Classic there in 1995.

The LET chief executive, Tim Howland, said: "We are very grateful that Chart Hills has stepped in at such short notice and the aim is to relaunch the Laura Davies Invitational at Chart Hills next year."
