Ryder end title sponsorship of Doral Open

The PGA Tour tournament at Doral Country Club will have a new title sponsor next year.

Ryder System Inc., title sponsor since 1987, has decided to give up that role. Doral hopes to name a replacement by June 1.

"A variety of companies have already expressed interest," tournament director Scott Montgomery said.

The tournament wants a six-year deal with a title sponsor that will increase the purse from $3 million to at least $4.5 million.

Ryder sold off its consumer truck division in 1996, making national advertising less important. The Miami-based company will continue to be affiliated with Doral in a smaller role, Ryder chairman M. Anthony Burns said Tuesday.

"We clearly had a very difficult decision," Burns said. "But as we look to the future of our company, the way our business has changed, the size the tournament has grown, it was appropriate to take a reduced role."
