Tom Lehman replaces Els at Grand Slam

Ernie Els, the first player to be runner-up in three consecutive majors, passed up his alternate spot in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and will be replaced by Tom Lehman, the PGA of America said today.

The Grand Slam is for the four major championship winners, but two alternates were required this year because Tiger Woods won the last three. Vijay Singh also got in by winning The Masters.

Paul Azinger is the other alternate who will play for $1 million in prize money Nov. 21-22 at Poipu Bay Golf Course in Kauai. Els declined his invitation because of a scheduling conflict.

The PGA also announced it was changing the format back to stroke play. It had been match play the past two years.

"The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is a showcase for major champions and allows spectators and television viewers the rare opportunity to see an elite foursome play together,'' PGA of America president Will Mann said. "Stroke play will provide the best format to watch all four players simultaneously.''

Woods is the defending champion. He will not take part in the pro-am because he is playing the Johnnie Walker Classic in Thailand and will not arrive in Hawaii until late Nov. 20.
