Lionel Hebert, 1957 PGA Champion, dies

Lionel Hebert, the 1957 PGA Championship winner, has died at his home. He was 72.

A lifelong resident of Lafayette, Hebert won six PGA Tour titles during a career in which he and his late brother, Jay, became the most successful brother duo on the tour.

Hebert beat Dow Finsterwald 2 and 1 in final of the 1957 PGA Championshi at Miami Valley in Dayton Ohio, the last time the tournament was contested at match play. Jay Hebert won the 1960 PGA Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

Lionel Hebert also won the 1956 St. Petersburg Open, the 1958 Tucson Open, 1960 Cajun Classic, 1962 Memphis Open, and 1966 Citrus Open.

After retiring, Hebert worked as a golf instructor. He served as national vice president of the PGA of America twice and as chairman of its Tournament Committee in 1962-63 and 1972-73.

Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday at the Martin & Castile Funeral Home.

The family has requested memorial contributions in Hebert's name be made to the Kidney Foundation of Louisiana and the American Diabetes Association.
