Mark James remains as Ryder Cup Vice Captain

Mark James deep in discussion at the European Tour meeting last night. Allsport.

The European tour's executive committee unanimously confirmed its support for Mark James as Ryder Cup vice-captain, under pressure because of his controversial book and squabble with Nick Flado.

The committee gave its support to captain Sam Torrance over his choice of Ian Woosnam and James as his vice-captains for next year's match at the Belfry.

James' position had been in doubt in the fallout from his autobiography in which he had criticized certain players, notably Faldo, who was not chosen for the team.

``Mark is going to have a chat with Nick and I hope that that will be the end of it,'' Torrance said after Tuesday's meeting, which precedes the Loch Lomond International tournament starting Wednesday.

James was pleased with the result of the meeting.

``I'm happy that Sam has had unanimous support in his choice. We all want to put this matter to bed. Some mud has been slung and we need to move on.''

Faldo said James had breached the players code of conduct by publishing the book while he was still an official of the team.

James responded by accusing Faldo of launching a campaign to discredit him in a bid to become captain.

``I know Nick's representatives have been ringing other players' representatives,'' James told BBC radio on Tuesday.

``So he's on a huge campaign to do two things - firstly, to try to discredit me, and secondly, to gain credibility and further his claims for the captaincy in future years.''
