A new sponsor will help
the Las Vegas Invitational offer one of the richest purses on the PGA Tour.
The tournament now will
be known as the Invensys Classic at Las Vegas and offer a $4.25 million purse,
with $765,000 going to the winner. Last year's tournament paid out $2.6 million.
The purse is the largest
for a regular season PGA event outside The Players Championship, which had a
$6 million payout this year.
Invensys, a London-based
electronics, software and systems company, signed a three-year deal under which
the purse will rise to $5 million by 2002. The previous title sponsor was the
Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
