Paul Lawrie explains caddie sacking

Open champion Paul Lawrie cruised into a share of third place in the first round of the Desert Classic golf tournament with the help of Seve Ballesteros's former caddie

Scotsman Lawrie has taken on Englishman Martin Gray after sacking Irishman Patrick Byrne only 10 minutes before going out to play Billy Mayfair in the second round of last week's Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship in California.

With Byrne back home in Dubai, where he first met Lawrie at this event last year, the British Open champion was at pains to put the record straight on why he fired him.

"He's had a lot of trouble from his family who live here in Dubai, so I want to say what actually happened," Lawrie said.

"His family think he's mixed up in something or doing something really bad to get the sack 10 minutes before tee-off.

"But I had arranged for Patrick and I to finish, in my own mind, before I played Billy Mayfair. My coach Adam (Hunter) thought it would be the right thing to tell him but he didn't take it very well.

"I didn't think he would be in the right frame of mind to go out with me then, so Adam caddied for me.

"There's no big deal in us parting company, just a player-caddie thing. Little bits and pieces had been going on in my head for a few weeks and I wasn't happy with our relationship."
