Standard Life ends sponsorship of Loch Lomond

The European Tour has lost Standard Life as one of its sponsors, just a month after Ernie Els won its tournament at Loch Lomond.

Els was victorious at the British Open warm-up but Gordon Arthur, the company’s director of corporate affairs, said: "We agreed to be sponsors for a three-year period and it has been a hugely beneficial venture.

"We have achieved the original marketing objectives and we now wish to look at new ways of promoting the Standard Life name in an ever-changing and dynamic marketplace."

After talks with the Tour executive director Ken Schofield, Loch Lomond Gold Club confirmed that the expected to keep the same date on the tour calendar – the week before the Open at Lytham – for 2001.

Thomas Bjorn won the inaugural Loch Lomond World Invitational in 1996. Then Gulfstream were sponsors for one year before Standard Life took over.
