Montgomerie intends to use controversial "hot" driver

Colin Montgomerie expects to use the banned Callaway ERC driver in upcoming European Tour events, and possibly the British Open in July.

But the controversial club will not be in his bag this week at the Benson and Hedges International at The Belfry.

Montgomerie, who will defend his title at the tournament beginning Thursday, is playing without the club because it's not needed. The driver, which is banned in the United States but not in Europe, could work its way into Montgomerie's arsenal soon.

The United States Golf Association has banned the driver because it gives a spring-like effect on contact, increasing distance. The Royal and Ancient Club, which governs the game outside the United States, has not imposed a similar ban and is still testing the club.

"I haven't used it in tournaments yet and I won't this week because they have narrowed the fairways at about 300 yards, and so an extra 20-25 yards could put me in the rough more often," Montgomerie said.
