Montgomerie wins EMC Skills Challenge

Colin Montgomerie warmed up for the Volvo PGA Championship by winning the EMC Skills Challenge yesterday at Wentworth..

The competition between eight of Europe's players tested them in a series of eight challenges: long driving, mid-irons, short irons, pitching, bunkers (fairway and greenside), trouble shots and putting.

Montgomerie took the £56,000 first prize, ahead of Thomas Bjorn, Jean van de Velde, Paul Lawrie, Bernhard Langer, Sam Torrance, Jose Maria Olazabal and Seve Ballesteros.

Europe's No 1 for the past seven seasons finished top in long driving with 285 yards (three ahead of Langer), mid-irons (the best of his three shots finished just under six feet from the flag and nobody else was inside 12 feet and pitching, where his best effort was to 17 inches.

Montgomerie also received the Vardon Trophy, awarded at the European tour's annual dinner to the winner of the previous season's Order of Merit.
