Greg Norman has reached
an agreement to take over the running of the Australasian Players championship
from next season.
Norman, who won the tournament
when it was first held in 1988 then retained his title the following year, released
a statement on Friday announcing he would host the event for at least the next
five years.
The former world number
one said he initially wanted to stage the tournament at the Royal Queensland
course where he trained before turning professional in the 1970s.
The two-time British Open
champion already runs an annual Australasian Tour which bears his name as well
as the Shark Shootout held each year in the United States.
"This has been a dream
of Greg's to have a golf tournament in Queensland," Norman's Australian manager
Frank Williams said in the statement.
"Greg has always wanted
a golf tournament in Queensland that he was in control of, just like he's done
with the (Greg Norman) International in Sydney."
