Record crowds expected for 2000 Open

Crowds attending this year's Open Championship at St Andrews are in line for the best viewing opportunities ever following improvements in the grandstand seating facilities around the course.

The Royal & Ancient Golf Club have added an extra 3,500 seats to the number available in 1995 when The Open was last held on the Old Course, making a total of 21,500 for spectators around the course and overlooking the practice ground.

New stands have been added, existing seating has been improved and just over 1,000 seats at the back of the 18th green have been made available having been reserved in past Championships. The R&A are already reporting great interest in the Championship, from July 20-23, with all composite and reserved seats on the 'Road Hole' 17th sold out.

David Hill, the Championship Secretary, said: "This is great news for golf fans and reflects the encouraging numbers we have been witnessing with our advance ticket sales. I have no doubt the extra seats will be taken up every day, enabling more people to view what will undoubtedly be an Open Championship to remember."

An eight-day season ticket for the 129th Open costs £105. Applications can be made to: The Ticket Office, Royal and Ancient Golf Club, St Andrews, Fife, KY16 9JD. Tel: 01334-478478.
