The winner of this year's
Open golf tournament at St Andrews will receive £ 500,000 ($787,400),
an increase of £150,000 ($236,200) on the cheque handed to Paul Lawrie
last year.
"In addition to the 43
percent increase for the winner, we have substantially increased all other prizes
by amounts up to 40 percent," said David Hill, championship secretary of the
Royal and Ancient Golf Club.
"This now means that while
there will be £ 500,000 for the winner, any player who makes the cut will
receive at least £ 7,000 ($11,020).
The total prize money available
for golf's oldest major championship will be a record £ 2.75 million ($4.33
million).
