Jumbo Ozaki became the oldest player to
win a title on the Japanese tour, capturing the $926,000
Sun-Chlorella Classic in a playoff today.
The 53-year-old Japanese star birdied the first playoff hole to
beat Shoichi Yamamoto. This was Ozaki's 112th victory in 30 years
as a pro but his first in 13 months.
Yamamoto, a 36-year-old journeyman who has yet to win on tour,
started the final round with a two-stroke lead. Ozaki (68) and
Yamamoto (70) finished regulation at 12-under-par 276.
Teruo Sugihara was a month younger than Ozaki is now when he won
the Daikyo Open in 1990.
Ozaki earned $185,200 for his victory. Yamamoto took home
$92,600 in his best finish since joining the tour in 1985.
