Jesper Parnevik to have hip surgery

Swedish golfer Jesper Parnevik, troubled by a sore hip since the U.S. Open, will have the same surgery as Greg Norman and miss at least the next six weeks.

The surgery will be done Saturday by Dr. Marc Philippon, who performed the same procedure on Norman in June and Steve Elkington in August. Both made quick recoveries.

Parnevik's agent, Clarke Jones of IMG, said today that the golfer had an MRI exam done in Sweden prior to the British Open, and a chance meeting with Norman persuaded him to go to Philippon for arthroscopic surgery to repair his labrum.

Parnevik will be out for at least 6 weeks. .Allsport.

"Both those guys are doing great,'' Jones said. "There's no great time to do it. The thought was to wait until after Thanksgiving, but if anything does go wrong, now we've got 16 weeks before the Mercedes Championship.''

Parnevik, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour this year and No. 10 in the world ranking, will try to return in time for Tour Championship at the end of October or the season-ending World Golf Championship event in Spain.
