Past
Open champions are to take part in a unique event to mark the first St Andrews
Open of the new millennium. Invitations have gone out to all 27 living champions
to participate in a four-hole event over the opening and closing holes of the
Old Course on the eve of this year’s championship.
From Sam Snead in 1946 to defending champion Paul Lawrie, these past champions
hold 46 Open titles between them. The event will comprise a semi-competitive
format and will take place at 4.30 pm on Wednesday, July 19 - the final practice
day before the championship begins.
Commenting on the announcement of the Past Champions event, R&A Secretary Peter
Dawson said: “The R&A feels that a few holes over the Old Course is a fitting
way to allow the public to be part of a celebration on the Open Championship
in this special year and to honour players who have contributed so much to the
game.
“We are certain that a large turnout of champions will contribute to what should
be a wonderful spectacle.”
BBC Television will be covering the event live and normal ticket prices will
apply - £18 for adults, £9 for senior citizens and £8 for youths between the
ages of 16-21.
