Norman will play in Presidents
cup despite rankings
Captain Peter Thomson today
said Greg Norman would be in the Presidents Cup team, even if he is not qualified.
Players qualify by ranking, but unless several leading players can start to get
points, it will be the smallest Australian representation in the four-year history
of the event, Thomson said.
This year's event will
be in Virginia from October 19 to 22, and each team has 12 players.
Norman is 14th on the international
team selection standings, but as captain Thomson can make two selections regardless
of ranking, and he will include Norman.
"It seems inconceivable
there would be a Presidents Cup without Greg Norman," Thomson told AAP.
There were four Australians
on the last International team: Norman, Steve Elkington, Craig Parry and Stuart
Appleby.
The standings are led by
Fiji's Vijay Singh, the US Masters champion, followed by South African Ernie Els, Zimbabwe's Nick Price and Paraguay's Carlos Franco.
