Closing 65 clinches title for Bernardini

A closing round of 65 enabled Italy's Marco Bernardini to cruise to a three-shot victory in the BMW Russian Open in Moscow.

The 22-year-old from Rome, son of former Senior Tour pro Roberto Bernardini, finished on 19-under-par 269, with his playing partner, Erol Simsek from Germany, on 272 after a 67.

Bernardini was a somewhat surprise winner. He had not won a Challenge Tour event before, moreover he hadn't finished in the top-10 of any tournament, although he is the reigning Italian PGA champion.

Starting the final round two shots off the lead, he soon made clear his intentions at the Moscow County Club, starting his final round birdie-eagle-birdie to race into a lead he never relinquished.

Best British finishers were the Scottish trio of Andrew Raitt, Gordon Sherry and Euan Little. Raitt, with a closing 66, and Sherry with 68, finished in joint sixth place on 276, while Little was a stroke further back after a 71.

A fourth Scot, Graham Rankin, finished on 278 but edged into the top 15 on the Order of Merit, which is still headed by Ireland's David Higgins who finished joint 36th.
