The world's first $1 million
golf tournament will now offer $2m prizemoney, organisers announced here overnight.
They said the move was in response to the number of events offering $1m to the
winner, which had hurt the tournament's ability to attract the world's top players.
The other prizes for the
Million Dollar Challenge, now to be known as the Nedbank Golf Challenge, have
each been increased by $US50,000 ($84,860).
Second place is worth $US300,000
and the player finishing last is guaranteed $US150,000.
The total prize fund will
be $US4,060,000.
The elite 12-man event
was first played in January 1982, when Johnny Miller took home $US500,000 ($849,000)
of the total purse of $1m.
The top prize was increased
to $1m in 1987 in a winner-take-all event won by Welshman Ian Woosnam.
