Lee Westwood celebrates winning the European Open at the K-Club. Allsport
Lee Westwood is the European Tour's Asprey & Garrard golfer of the month
for June, for which he earns a £1,000 charity donation for the Golf
Foundation.
Westwood won the Compaq European Grand Prix at De Vere Slaley Hall - his
second title of the year following his success in the Deutsche Bank-SAP
Open TPC of Europe in May.
He was also tied fourth in the Compass Group English Open and tied fifth
in the 100th US Open Championship at Pebble Beach, his best finish in a
major championship.
It is the first time Westwood, the 1998 golfer of the year and a winner
of 12 European Tour titles to date, has won the golfer of the month
award since August 1996, but he already is a leading candidate for the
July award after winning the Smurfit European Open at the K Club.
Also considered were Darren Clarke, who successfully defended the
Compass Group English Open title after coming from six shots behind in
the final round, Steen Tinning, winner of the inaugural Wales Open,
Miguel Angel Jiménez and Ernie Els, who finished joint second in the US
Open, Swedes Patrik Sjoland and Fredrik Jacobson, and 65-year-old Neil
Coles, who became the first golfer to win a professional event in six
different decades with his success in the Microlease Jersey Seniors
Open.
