Tiger Woods to play in Dubai Desert Classic

Tiger Woods will venture into new territory next year when he plays the Dubai Desert Classic in March.

"I am very much looking forward to coming to Dubai," Woods said in a statement released by the European Tour. "I always look forward to playing in new places.''

Woods has played at least one international event since turning pro in 1996. He has played the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open in Germany the past two years.

The Dubai tournament, at Emirates Golf Club on March 1-4, will be played at the same time as the Doral Open, an event Woods has played in only once (in 1998, finishing in a tie for ninth place).

The defending champion at Dubai is Jose Coceres of Argentina.

Tiger Woods presence will add to the interest in the 2001 Dubai Desert Classic. Allsport

"Tiger will add megastar status to an already world-class event,'' tournament director Bob Willkinson said. "This will result in billions of golfers all over the world focusing on Dubai next March.''
