Tiger Woods to play in EMC World Cup

Already a champion on three continents, Tiger Woods will make his first trip to South America in December to help the United States defend its title in the World Cup.

This is the first year the World Cup, a team event among 24 countries, is being held as part of the World Golf Championship series. It will be played Dec. 7-10 at Buenos Aires Golf Club in Argentina.

Woods and Mark O'Meara led the United States to a five-stroke victory over Spain last year in Malaysia, and Woods won the individual medal at 21-under 263 by nine strokes over Frank Nobilo of New Zealand.

Woods will be able to choose his partner. Along with O'Meara, his neighbor in Orlando, he also is considering David Duval.

This year's World Cup, sponsored by EMC, will feature a new format -- two rounds of alternate shot and two rounds of best ball. The $3 million purse, which does not count as official money, pays out $1 million to the winning team.

The first 18 countries in the field will be determined by the Official World Golf Ranking of their top available player. The other six teams qualify in regional competitions.

Woods won theOpen to become the youngest player to complete the Grand Slam. In a career that began just five years ago, he already has won in North America, Europe and Asia.

Woods's announcement to play in the World Cup comes a month after he said he would not go to Australia in January to play in the Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship, which has a $5 million purse and counts toward the money list.

He won two WGC events last year -- the NEC Invitational at Firestone and the American Express Championship in Spain -- and was runner-up in the Match Play Championship at La Costa in February.
