Tiger fits in early practice round at Valhalla

Tiger Woods sneaked in a practice round during light rain on the course where he has never played and where he will defend his PGA Championship title next week.

The world's No. 1 golfer didn't give tour or course officials much notice for his Tuesday visit, and he didn't stay long. Valhalla general manager Mike Montague said Woods never even entered the clubhouse.

"It was a spur-of-the-moment thing,'' Montague told the Courier-Journal.

Woods started on the back nine and used a golf cart. He finished his round in the early afternoon and immediately boarded a private plane to Michigan for this week's Buick Open.

Woods's appearance at Valhalla drew only a handful of spectators.

Valhalla assistant pro Nick Pozaric caught some of Woods's round with a hand-held video camera. The footage ended up on every local news telecast Tuesday afternoon.

"It was quick,'' Montague said. "I have to admit, I might not be a kid, but it was sort of a thrill to see the celebrated golfer of the new generation come out and play your course.''
