Tiger Woods has been named the most powerful person in sports for the year 2000 by The Sporting News.
Woods is only the second athlete to head the weekly magazine's
top 100 chartof the most powerful people in sports, The Sporting News said in a press release today. Michael Jordan headed the 10-year-old list in 1997.
NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue was second on the list, followed by News Corporation
Chief Executive Officer, Rupert Murdoch. NBA commissioner David Stern was fourth.
A story on Woods in the Dec. 18 issue of The Sporting News says the golfer's "charisma, along with his dominance on the PGA Tour have captured the hearts and minds of (fans of all sports),
and in turn, the wallets and checkbooks of corporate America like nobody since ... well, since
Jordan."
