England spared World Cup qualification

England will not have to play in the Jamaican qualifying tournament for the 2 million World Cup of Golf team championship after all.

The decisions of Masters champion Vijay Singh and former Open winner Nick Price not to enter mean that England will be one of the 18 exempt countries in Argentina from December 7-10.

Jamie Spence and Brian Davis will represent England because Lee Westwood is skipping the event in which the winning pair will collect more than 300,000 each.

Tiger Woods defends the crown he won with Mark O'Meara in Malaysia last year, as well as the individual title, but his partner has not been named yet. Even though he is only 102nd in the world rankings, Spence is the next highest placed Englishman after Westwood.

Nick Faldo is next on the list, but the other spot is determined by the European Order of Merit and Londoner Davis squeezes in thanks to a first Tour victory at the Spanish Open in May.

With Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke unavailable, Paul Lawrie and Gary Orr will represent Scotland while Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley continue the partnership that gave Ireland victory three years ago. The Welsh pair will be Phillip Price and Ian Woosnam, runners-up together in Italy in 1991.
