Clarke's sponsors back major success

Darren Clarke, the top golfer who loves a punt, has gambled on his ability to win Majors galore over the next 10 years.

The Ulsterman clinched a deal with Sport Soccer - owners of sports equipment manufacturer Donnay, best known for their tennis gear - which will earn him a £ 2million cash bonus for every Major he wins, starting with this week's Masters.

With a potential of 40 over the next 10 years, that's £ 80million to have a stab at.

The gravy train could hit the buffers, however, because he'll get nothing for second place. It's similar to the deal the same company has with tennis star Greg Rusedski for winning the Grand Slam or being world No 1.

Darren Clarke will be hoping for some major sucess over the next decade. Allsport.

Donnay wanted Clarke on a £ 1.5m sponsorship over five years to wear their range of clothes.

Clarke came up with the novel alternative, and said "It would have been easy to take the money they offered me in sponsorship, But this way was a challenge.

"I like a gamble and this makes me feel confident. You have to believe in yourself."

Donnay spokesman Mike Basso said: "Darren is basically backing himself to win at least one Major in the next 10 years, and if he wins more he'll be quids-in."
