John Daly continutes rankings climb

With his runner-up finish in the German Masters, John Daly moved up to No. 56 in the world ranking Monday for his highest position in more than five years.

Daly, who finished last season at No. 507, won the BMW International Open in Germany last month and also has top-5 finishes this year at the Scottish Open and the Canadian Open.

He could qualify for the Masters by finishing in the top 50 at the end of the season.

Daly also is in position to make his first World Golf Championship event. He needs to stay in the top 64 by Feb. 11, to qualify for the Match Play Championship at La Costa that month.

The last time Daly was ranked this high was No. 40 on Jan. 7, 1996.

Charles Howell III also continued to climb. The former NCAA champion, who has been playing on sponsor's exemptions this year, tied for third at the Michelob Championship and moved from No. 65 to No. 50 in the world ranking. He started the season at No. 324.

Tiger Woods remained at No. 1, a position he has held the past two years.
