Ernie Els sued by former caddie

Double US Open champion Ernie Els is being sued by a former caddie for what he alleges are outstanding payments.

Simon Masilo, who worked for the South African when he won the Sun City Golf Challenge in 1999 and 2000 to earn himself $4 million, claims he has not been paid the agreed fee for those tournaments and several others.

"These guys (Els and his manager Nic Frangos) owe me money," Masilo said. "He owes me a lot of money and I've been trying to get hold of him for three months. But we haven't sat down and talked. I've given him enough chance and now I must get what I deserve.

"I still get on with Ernie. I'm not against him, but against the treatment I got from him. His manager doesn't know what agreement we came to on the golf course.

"No caddies have written contracts. They are all verbal."

Els's lawyer Derek Rabin confirmed that he had received a summons from Masilo's legal team on Friday.

"I've been instructed by our client Ernie Els to defend the action instituted against him by Simon Masilo," Rabin read from a prepared statement.

"Ernie has been assured by his management team that all his obligations to Simon have been fully discharged.

"Ernie has always enjoyed a good relationship with Simon and does not wish to be drawn into any controversy or commit himself to be distracted at this time."

Els, who led this year's Sun City Golf Challenge at the halfway stage on Friday at the Gary Player Country Club, was unavailable for comment, but Frangos confirmed that he was aware of the action against him.

"Ernie is very disappointed," Frangos told Reuters. "We recently held a meeting with Simon's lawyer on the issue, but nothing was resolved. But Simon was never Ernie's primary caddie. Ricci Roberts was always his first choice, and Simon only caddied for him every now and then."
