New twist in Ernie Els caddie row

The dispute between Ernie Els and his former caddie Simon Masilo took on a new twist on Sunday when the caddie's lawyer said a settlement was only days away.

Masilo's lawyer Mark Rosin told Reuters that a settlement was likely to take place within the next 48 hours, but the Els camp denied any knowledge of this.

The settlement is believed to be for a sum between 700,000 ($62,580) and 1,000,000 rand ($89,400).

Masilo had started court proceedings against his former employer, saying he was not paid the agreed fee for several tournaments in which he had caddied for Els, including his victories in the 1999 and 2000 Sun City Challenges.

"There have been a lot of phone calls to and fro over the weekend between interested third parties who want to resolve this issue in a way that will make everyone happy," Rosin said.

"We have not settled yet, but we expect to do so within the next 48 hours."

However, Els' manager Nic Frangos told Reuters he had no knowledge of any proposed settlement.

World No. 4 Els ended his season with a one-stroke victory in the Players' Championship at the Royal Cape Golf Club on Sunday.
