The European golf tour's Estoril Open in Portugal, scheduled for Oct. 11-14,
was postponed because of the ``climate of uncertainty'' following attacks in New
York and Washington, organizers said.
``With the risk of unpredictable developments that could compromise the staging
of any international sporting event,'' the tournament was called off, said Simon
Punter, a spokesman for promoter Lagos Premier Sports Events.
Lagos plans to stage the event in 2002 and asked the European PGA Tour to reschedule
it at the same Quinta da Marinha course in Cascais, Punter said.
The Ryder Cup, originally scheduled to start Friday, was postponed until next
year after U.S. golfers said they didn't want to play in the match against Europe
so soon after the Sept. 11 attacks. The U.S. PGA Tour canceled four tournaments
the weekend after hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon.
The Cisco World Matchplay Championship at Wentworth, England, starts Oct. 11.
