Despite a two-shot penalty and three consecutive bogeys, Darren
Fichardt recovered sufficiently to clinch the South African Tour
Championship title at Leopard Creek.
The South African finished the round with 68, giving him an overall
total of 270, 14 under par, sufficient to take the title.
Fichardt contravened Rule 13.2 by repairing a pitch mark on the
apron of the sixth green, which lay between his ball and a hole.
Rule 13.2 considers the apron to be part of the fairway and therefore
Tournament Officials considered Fichardt to be improving his line
of play.
Fichardt said. "A two-shot penalty always knocks you and I had
to dig deep after that. But the spectators and my family were all
cheering me on and I thought, 'Hang on, you're still in this tournament.
Don't give up now'."
