Dan Marino fails in US Open bid

Former NFL quarterback Dan Marino failed in his attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open.

Marino shot a six-over-par 78 at Weston Hills Country Club during local qualifying and failed to make sectional qualifying by eight strokes. He needed to finish in the top nine out of 137 entrants at Weston Hills to move on to the sectional round at Old Memorial Golf Course in Tampa on June 5.

The 2001 U.S. Open is scheduled for June 14-17 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

A total of 8,340 players are trying for less than 100 available berths in next month's championship.
