Mickelson withdraws from AmEx Championship

Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from the World Golf Championships-American Express Championship.

Mickelson had been on his way to Houston to participate in a media day to promote the Tour Championship, which he won last year. His plane was grounded in Austin in the wake of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The media day was cancelled and Mickelson decided to drive back to Scottsdale to be with his wife, who is pregnant with their second child, and daughter. He called tournament officials Tuesday afternoon to tell them he had decided not to play in the $5 million event.

A total of 20 players in the field of 66 have not arrived in St. Louis. Many were players who live in the United States who had planned to travel on Tuesday and were stranded when the Federal Aviation Association stopped all air travel.

Of that total, 18 were flying in private planes. The other three were either taking commercial flights or driving.

Tournament officials have canceled play for Thursday. A total of 36 holes will be played on Friday and 18 are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

"Through the course of the week, we will explore all of the scenarios and try to understand exactly what will or won't happen in the future," said Mike Bodney, the PGA Tour Senior Vice President of International Affairs. "I think we want to get through today, get to tomorrow, understand a little bit better what is going to happen this week, and as things unfold, make those decisions as they come to us."
